FAQS
Speech-language pathology is the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of communication related disorders. Speech-language pathologists, also referred to as speech and language therapists, speech therapists, or SLPs, obtain Master’s degrees and must pass a board exam. Speech-language pathologists are certified and highly trained professionals that work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Because there are a plethora of speech and language disorders, some therapists are more specialized in particular areas of treatment and diagnoses than others. Speech-language pathologists are required to be licensed by the state. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is “a professional association for speech–language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists in the United States and internationally.” Samantha holds and maintains her ASHA certificate of clinical competence, commonly referred to as obtaining one’s “C’s.” CCC-SLP means that the individual maintains the level of excellence to hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology with ASHA.

If your child is a late talker, has difficulty following directions or answering questions, struggles to pronounce certain speech sounds, or if you suspect that he or she may have delayed speech or language skills for their age - it is best to contact a speech-language pathologist for an assessment of your child’s speech and language abilities. As children age, speech and language demands increase significantly. Children’s minds are like sponges, and the younger a child is, the more likely he or she is to absorb skills early and not require intervention as time passes. The longer one waits, the greater the expectations will be and the more a child may fall behind. Many children who receive speech-language therapy at a young age become strong communicators and highly academically successful. Early intervention will not only set your child up for success, but can be extremely financially beneficial in preventing the need for further costly interventions down the road.
The ability to communicate effectively is important at any age. Speech-Language Pathology helps adults bolster communication skills, enhances memory, and improves relationships. It benefits adults diagnosed with organic or functional voice disorders; neurological damage due to a stroke, trauma, accident, or infections; or neurological disorders.
