Speech-language pathology is the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of communication related disorders. Speech-language pathologists, also referred to as speech and language therapists, speech therapists, or SLPs, obtain Master’s degrees and must pass a board exam. Speech-language pathologists are certified and highly trained professionals that work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Because there are a plethora of speech and language disorders, some therapists are more specialized in particular areas of treatment and diagnoses than others. Speech-language pathologists are required to be licensed by the state. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is “a professional association for speech–language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists in the United States and internationally.” Samantha holds and maintains her ASHA certificate of clinical competence, commonly referred to as obtaining one’s “C’s.” CCC-SLP means that the individual maintains the level of excellence to hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology with ASHA.
